Martina Spetlova is former chemistry student from Prague who originally came to London to study English and ended up graduating with a distinction from the MA Fashion at Central Saint Martins under the late Louise Wilson. During her studies, Spetlova worked with Jeremy Scott and John Galliano besides setting up a women’s artisan centre in Pakistan. Having graduated in 2010, she set up her own label a year later. She is inspired by architecture and a love of geometry. Her technical knowledge and desire for experimentation is obvious in her collections which contrast combinations of textures and colours to create unique looks. One of her trademark skills is handwoven leather and Spetlova’s creations are vibrant, sophisticated and finished to an incredibly high standard. She is at the forefront of experimentation in her field and is clearly an exciting emerging talent.
Her S/S15 collection itself is very much an extension of her renowned techniques and experimentation with textiles; however, the variation of materials and shapes are unlike any of her collections to date.
The silhouettes are simultaneously dramatic yet also incredibly simple. The woven, patchwork, perforated, smocked and patent leathers are a salute to the brand’s core identity and show Spetlova’s continuous advancement as an intelligent and aware fashion designer.
As Dover Street Market is an obvious choice to showcase her designs it is great to know that from 17th January 2015 Martina Spetlova will be stocked exclusively not just in London’s Dover Street Market but also in Ginza in Japan and NYC in the States. Spetlova couldn’t have summed it up better with this quote:
“Dover Street Market is an incredible store and I have always dreamed of working with them. They encourage and support creativity, which is something very rare. It’s an amazing opportunity and I’m looking forward to the Saturday launch.”
Volt Café has had an eye out for Spetlova for quite a while – this kicky short shows her A/W13 collection.
